Recently, comedian Ricky Gervais was invited to a late-night comedy show and was asked about his atheism. His response was that he didn't believe in the God of the Bible, or for that matter, in any god. Mr. Gervais routinely mocks people of faith for their beliefs, but makes his case based on scientific proof. In his mind, if you can't prove God exists through science, then Ricky won't believe in Him. (I should point out that the first assumption made by science is that everything is explainable through natural cause & effect principles, and that there is no God.)
Mr. Gervais continued that through religions all over the world, there are 3,000 "gods" that are believed by certain people. He says that while a Christian denies 2,999 of these gods, Ricky denies all 3,000 of them, so therefore, the difference is miniscule. His logic is that his beliefs are only 0.03% different than those of Christians. But his mathematics are faulty. Here's where he errs:
There may only be a mathematical difference of 0.03% between the numbers 2,999 and 3,000. But there is an INFINITE difference between zero (0) and one (1)! There's a BIG difference between not believing in God, and believing in Him! In fact, the Bible says that God has made it clear to every single person that He exists. From looking at the world and the universe around us, we should be able to conclude that the most plausible explanation for our existence is that God created us. Those who reject God are truly rejecting their own rational thinking processes.
Psalm 14:1 reads: The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." Well, Mr. Gervais, you are indeed a fool. I pray that you come to repentance through faith in Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
